Smell – the sense of smell receives about 3.5% of sensory impressions. The receptors in the nose sense chemical molecules. Thanks to this, the brain can assess whether the smell is pleasant (which is in most cases synonymous with a signal that something is harmless) or unpleasant. Unpleasant impressions often play a protective role.
